Due to the consistent customer orientation of manufacturing and production, companies are confronted with an increasing number of variants. Digitalisation and automation make it possible to reduce the complexity costs and throughput times for mass personalisation (the individualised production of customer products in batch size 1 using the means and methods of mass production). Fraunhofer IPA has developed the concept of the DesignChain as a tool for mastering the increasing variants.

As DesignChain, we define the automated, digital process from the recording of individual customer requirements through design and technical preparation to production. We take into account the often heterogeneous system landscape along the CAx chain (CAD, CAM, PDM, VNCK), the specific interfaces of design programmes and the data continuity to CAM tools, for example for 3D printing and milling.

In this way, customer orders can be processed automatically and the necessary work preparation can be supported in the best possible way through automatic work plan generation and simulated production times. This results in a reduction of lead times in calculation, construction and work preparation processes.

The seminar shows how the continuous, highly automated process chain - from the recording of customer requirements to the transfer of a validated NC code to production and its monitoring - can be realised.
